The following readings have the topic sentences underlined
Topic: Are life jackets important?
Example:
Everyone should wear a life jacket when they are on a boat. Life jackets have been proven to save lives. No one can predict when an accident might happen. There may not be enough time to put on a life jacket, but if you are already wearing it, it may save your life. The topic sentence in the example is underlined.
The rest of the sentences in the paragraph support the topic sentences.

Example:
Bacon is also a good addition to any balanced breakfast. Bacon is healthy, wholesome, and the sound of it sizzling is enough to wake up a field of sleeping cherubs. If I could, I would eat nothing but bacon for breakfast until the day I die.
Notice how the example is all about bacon as a breakfast item. How do we know this? Because the Topic Sentence gives us that signal. The Topic Sentence says, “Hold on reader! We're going to talk about BACON!”
Notes
● Remember, a good topic sentence is short and to the point, but still answers questions like "Why is this in here?", and “Why did I put all this information together?"
● A reader should also be able to take the Topic Sentences and Thesis statement of any essay and understand what the point, stance, purpose, and/or intention of the essay is.
